It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of former Pine Crest School Dance Director, Mrs. Brenda Gooden ’17H, on October 7, 2026.
After earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Mrs. Gooden danced professionally with the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre. Seeking a warmer climate, she moved to Fort Lauderdale and joined Pine Crest as a full-time dance instructor in 1981. Over the course of her distinguished tenure, she directed 30 full-length ballets and choreographed countless productions across all Divisions.
To her students, Mrs. Gooden was far more than a ballet teacher. She was a trusted mentor, a steady presence and a consistent source of encouragement. Alumni fondly remember her Palmer Dance Studio as a second home and a place where laughter and honest conversations were just as important as pliés and pirouettes. Students knew they could always find a listening ear and a caring heart with her.
Mrs. Gooden’s expectations were high because she believed deeply in her students' potential. Whether reminding them that "five minutes early is ten minutes late" or noting that "I never said ballet was easy," she imparted lessons that extended far beyond dance: show up prepared, work hard, persevere through challenges and always strive to do your best. Those lessons remain a vital part of her enduring legacy.
Mrs. Gooden retired in June 2017 after 36 years of dedication to Pine Crest students. In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, President Dr. Dana Markham ’18H presented her with an honorary diploma during the Upper School Commencement Ceremony on May 18, 2017.
Dancers remained in touch with Mrs. Gooden for years, and she continued to share in the joys of their lives long after graduation.
“As her students will tell you, being in her ballet class was never solely about technique,” shared Dr. Markham. “It was about building grit, resilience and character. Dancing at Pine Crest under her leadership meant being part of something truly meaningful and enduring.”
May her memory and legacy continue to be a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
